A Day by the Sea – Discovering Southend Together

17.09.2026

Our recent trip to Southend was a wonderful day of creativity, community, friendship and, of course, fantastic fish and chips!

Our mixed group of older people, carers and former carers enjoyed a walk by the sea, explored charity shops and discovered live artists painting throughout the city centre as part of a street art festival.

One of the highlights was meeting an artist who was painting in the street. When I asked if he lived locally, I discovered he was actually the organiser of the festival! He kindly took time out to recommend his favourite fish and chip restaurant — so naturally, we followed his advice.

We were not disappointed. After a delicious group meal, one service user told me it was “the best fish and chips I ever had!”

What made the day particularly special was the way everyone looked out for one another. People walked together, chatted, shared experiences and helped each other along the way. There was a real sense that people had the currency of cooperation in their pocket.

The trip was about much more than a day out. It created opportunities to meet new people, experience something different, build confidence and strengthen connections — all important parts of reducing social isolation and promoting wellbeing.

Sometimes social inclusion happens through art, sometimes through a conversation with a stranger, sometimes through a walk beside the sea — and sometimes over a very good plate of fish and chips!

A memorable day, new connections and plenty of smiles along the way.
