Having a Befriender changes people’s lives and reminds them they are very much still part of a community of which they can benefit from in various ways. In many cases, older people who will not have socialised for some time, will take heart and encouragement from our befriending team and attend Ashford Place for a cup of tea and often a much needed chat. This can be a big step for them but one they do not regret as they will often make new friends, talk about shared interests and topics and take part in various activities.
This in turn is very beneficial to their mental and physical wellbeing and leads to a longer and more fulfilling life. It can be a worrying time for family members if their older relatives are not engaging in social activities, especially if they have the physical capacity to do so. That is why it is so important for befriending services to exist in our communities. People sometimes just need some encouragement which can give them a whole new outlook on life.
We are very aware not everyone has the physical ability to attend Ashford Place. Our Befriending Team are in constant contact with these people to ensure they know they are not forgotten and are as much part of the community as those that attend in person regularly.
We are always looking out for those who need us so we ask if you think you know of any elderly person living alone who may benefit from our Befriending service, please get in touch with us.
We always feel encouraged when we see our befriending clients come to Ashford Place making new friends and taking part in our various activity groups. They always have a good time when they come here and always come away with a smile and look forward to their next visit. It is beneficial to everyone’s mental and physical wellbeing to get out of the house if they can and spend time with their contemporaries. It enriches and prolongs their lives and prevents avoidable future health conditions.
We are always here for a chat, a cup of tea and a listening ear when it is needed.
