Ashford Place Dementia and Memory Café will be open every Tuesday throughout August, from 2 to 4pm. Members attending the Tuesday afternoon sessions enjoy a variety of activities from singing, dancing and gentle exercise to arts and crafts, quizzes, picture and word searches, Tangram and maths problems. All activities aim to promote a healthy and positive outlook for physical and mental wellbeing. A dedicated team of 6 volunteers are always on hand to support with refreshments and a chat.
The Decafe also benefits from monthly cinema screenings, school choir visits and a variety of visiting workshops and recently had a very informative and enjoyable afternoon, when university student Ellie Howe shared her expertise in the ancient art of Letter Locking. The process which dates from the Thirteenth Century, had everyone present writing a secret message on a sheet of vellum which they then folded and secured using a wax stamp, to hide its contents. Envelopes weren’t used in the UK for letters until the early nineteenth century.
