If you or someone you know has had a diagnosis of memory loss or early onset dementia then you should visit Ashford Place, Cricklewood, to join, register and avail of the services offered at the weekly Dementia Café that meets every Tuesday afternoon from 2pm to 4 pm. The café provides a safe and friendly space where those living with dementia and their carers can socialise in a happy and familiar environment. Fun and challenging activities (to keep the brain active) ranging from quizzes, word searches, arts and crafts, math and language problems are all on the menu followed by gentle stretching and fitness activities, singing, dancing and relaxation. Chatting and laughter over refreshments encourages socialising and establishes new friendships amongst those who attend. Support and advice on adjusting to life following a diagnosis and advice to carers can be accessed through the Dementia Peer support which meets every Tuesday morning also at Ashford Place. All who attend the Ashford Place Dementia Café are encouraged to stay positive and focus on the things they can do and enjoy while also challenging themselves to try a new puzzle or activity. They are also reminded that having dementia doesn’t mean you should feel unwell and that it’s important to stay healthy by taking regular exercise and eating well. They are advised to arrange regular health check - ups with a GP as well as having regular dental, sight and hearing checks. The importance of keeping vaccines and flu jabs up to date are also on the weekly ‘Reminder List’.
The Dementia Café understands that living with dementia can be challenging for all involved but everyone is encouraged to maintain a positive attitude and focus on physical and mental wellbeing and avoid becoming isolated or cut off.
The café welcomes anyone who is concerned about their memory and not just those with a dementia diagnosis.
Ashford Place acknowledges, with gratitude, the support of the Irish Government Emigrant Support fund and Zurich Community Trust, whose support ensures the Café can continue to offer an invaluable service to those who are affected by dementia in the environs of Ashford Place.
