On Tuesday 21st May, nurse Nazia from Brent Health Matters and her team of NHS support workers attended Ashford Place Dementia Café and delivered a very informative session on the importance of early testing for Bowel cancer. This is part of our work in helping people to live physically and mentally well. The large crowd learned that everyone aged from 54 to 74 in England, who is registered with a GP is invited to take part in the bowel screening programme. She explained that screening looks for early signs of bowel cancer and stressed that the test kits are sent to people who don’t have any symptoms. The session gave advice on carrying out the test and stressed the importance of returning the poo testing kit in the post. It was stressed that most tests are negative but as always everyone was advised to consult their GP if they notice anything that doesn’t seem right such as a change in normal bowel habits, losing weight without trying to, constant stomach pain or noticing signs of blood. Reassuringly the team stressed that when bowel cancer is spotted at an early stage, treatment is more likely to be successful. Everyone present was very appreciative to Nazia and her team for a very informative session on such an important health topic.
