Laughter, Remembrance, and Togetherness at Avonhurst House

18.06.2025

There was warmth in the air—and not just from the tea—at Avonhurst House this morning, where our Befriending Team hosted one of our much-loved coffee mornings. These gatherings, simple as they may seem, continue to be a powerful antidote to loneliness, offering residents a joyful moment to connect, reminisce, and share a laugh or two.

The turnout was, as always, wonderful. Conversations buzzed as residents sipped coffee and tea, catching up on the week’s goings-on. It was especially heartening to see a strong group of male residents gathered together—proof that friendship and camaraderie truly have no age limit.

This morning also held a poignant moment, as we paused for a minute’s silence in memory of Elizabeth "Betty" Bunford, a beloved longtime resident of Avonhurst who recently passed away. Betty had a deep connection to Ashford Place—she was a regular face here for many years, well before she became housebound.  She attended our French classes, joined in the bingo games, and was a creative spirit in our art group. When health challenges eventually made it harder for her to visit us in person, she became a part of our befriending service, continuing to stay connected in the most heartfelt way. Her style, presence and warmth were greatly missed today.

At Ashford Place, these coffee mornings are about more than just a cuppa—they’re about building community. Surprisingly, even in close living quarters like Avonhurst House, residents can go days without seeing one another. These regular get-togethers offer not just a social outing but a reason to pause, reflect, and truly connect.

To all the residents who come along and help create these wonderful moments—thank you. Your presence turns a simple morning into something truly special. We hope you enjoy these gatherings as much as we do.
