More than fifteen of us gathered here at Ashford Place to attend Cancer Research UK’s Talk Cancer workshop, led by our Cancer Awareness Trainers, Mary Woods and Amanda Tchie.
We began with some apprehension, as the topic of cancer is difficult for many to process and discuss. Initially, we described what the word “cancer” meant to us, and the answers painted a somber picture. However, after enhancing our understanding and reframing the topic, we began to describe hope in no uncertain terms. As the workshop progressed, the group became increasingly lively and engaged. We spoke passionately about the potential for improvement, change, and the significant advancements already evident in research and prognosis.
With the knowledge we gained, we hope to carry forward these conversations with greater confidence in discussing cancer within our community. We have been trained in:
- Tips for talking about cancer
- Key cancer information and common myths and facts
- Where to signpost people for more information
- How to order free Cancer Research UK resources
