Wallace Collection Brings Art to people living with Dementia with their  “Out of the Frame” Scheme

In an inspiring initiative, the Wallace Collection’s “Out of the Frame” scheme is bringing the joy of art to older adults, including those living with dementia, who reside in care homes and day centres across London. This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming curators from the Wallace Collection, who brought famous paintings (in reproduction) to our clients and their unpaid carers. We are keen to provide as many opportunities as possible to engage our dementia community in creative health programmes. “There is a very strong body of evidence detailing the benefits of creative health for people living with dementia, and in preventing cognitive decline.”  The excitement was palpable as participants viewed these renowned artworks and then tried their hand at creating their own masterpieces, using paintbrushes and paper provided by the Wallace Collection facilitators. This hands-on experience not only stimulated creativity but also fostered a sense of connection and engagement among the attendees.

The “Out of the Frame” programme is designed to reach older adults who may find it challenging to visit the Wallace Collection in person. Through lively sessions held in care homes and day centres, the programme uses reproductions and handling objects to spark interaction and discussion. Skilled facilitators adopt a person-centred approach, working closely with participants either one-on-one or in small groups to ensure a meaningful and enriching experience.

This initiative underscores the Wallace Collection’s commitment to making art accessible to all, regardless of physical or cognitive limitations, and highlights the transformative power of art in enhancing the quality of life for older adults.
