Bringing GAA players (Gaelic football and hurling) and older Irish people across Britain together to support, learn from and care for each other.
The project encourages the younger Irish to connect with the older Irish so that they will learn together and from each other via purposeful and mutually beneficial activities, while promoting greater understanding, closeness and respect between generations.
Ashford Place in partnership with the Provincial Council of Britain will match a GAA club to its nearest Irish welfare centre and help both groups to decide how to engage and support each other.
Examples of activities include:
Players –
• Visiting an elders group to play cards, have a chat about home, sport, anything!
• Inviting older people to go to a football or hurling match
• Raising funds for their partner Irish Welfare group
• Organising and running an annual celebratory event or day out
Elders –
• Talking to the young people about their experience of coming to England
• Passing on their expertise and experience of immigration to the younger people
• Passing on skills and knowledge
